What Lurks Within...

This is my new desk (pretty huh?).  Which is a mess.  And a source of a little stress.

I can't complain, I am very lucky.  I have work, in a year that could have easily gone the other way.

But I go back to my 2009 resolution of "better balance between work and personal life" - or at least the opportunity to be more social.  This desk, won't let me!  Or is the computer?  Or is it the fact that this winter has been hell and why bother going outside when it rains sideways? Or am I making excuses for my laziness???

I made strides today by taking Lucy down to San Terenzo for a long walk (and treating myself to a yummy latte macchiato) as it was finally sunny, albeit crisper than I prefer outside.  But, boy it was pretty...

So what's the reason of this post?  Well, maybe just trying to explain that working from the home is both a blessing and a curse.  While there is nothing better than working in your favorite pajamas all day, I have to ask myself, is it really the desk making you stress or the fact that you have gotten too comfortable NOT getting out. Hmmm...

I go to an office every day and sit in a battle ship gray cube under fluroescent lighting, nowhere near a window and breathe air that's been recirculated through the air ducts and lungs of my coworkers. It's either freezing (air conditioning) or sweltering (heater) reagardless of what's happening outside. For that reason, working from home--especially in Positano--sure sounds dreamy.

On the other hand, I go to meetings and share ideas with colleagues and go out to lunch and interface and network. There is always someone around to bounce an idea off of, or just chat with. It would be tough not to have that.

I think just about all of us in the winter climate are ready for some fresh air and sunshine. And you are exactly right in that any job is nothing to take for granted. Spring is just around the corner!

I hear you Megan and Cristie both. The isolation of home office work can be tough, but being surrounded by home, especially in a beautiful area is a blessing. I also miss the interaction of being part of a team. Even if I just get into town, have a tea in a nice cafe and greet friends and strangers, I feel better almost instantly. Sometimes I even get more done there -- I can be working for hours on a problem here, but as soon as I get out, walk, have a change of scenery, the solution comes much faster.

I am ready for warm temperatures as well. I am so over the winter, but at least it is sunny now here, albeit cold.

I work from home as well. I try to get outside even if it's just to run an errand.

With Spring coming up I will be able to take advantage of sitting in a nice piazza more often. Cannot wait.
